Melviona Thomson is the first Filipino American hired as a teacher and administrator in Central Florida School System. A native of the Philippine Island of Central Luzon , she has distinguished herself as an expert instructor and trainer in ESOL and Multicultural Education concepts and strategies. Mrs. Thomson received her Bachelor's degree from Florida State University, Master's degree from Nova Southeastern University and Education Specialist's degree at Stetson University, with emphasis in Curriculum and Instruction and Educational Leadership.
During the 17 years as a teacher and seven years as an administrator, Mrs. Thomson was recognized by the National Science Teachers' Association and National Council of Teachers in Mathematics as one of the two science teachers selected nationally from Florida by the National Air and Space Administration (NASA). She spent two weeks behind the scenes in NASA analyzing and studying on-going projects of the Space Station Laboratory.
Mrs. Thomson is a certified ESOL trainer and in Multicultural Education strategies with diverse populations and a certified trainer in "Using Cultural Competence to Close the Achievement Gap". Her extensive experience as a research associate with the Stetson University's Multicultural Education Institute has enabled her to co-present workshops on Cultural Diversity models and strategies in 2006 and 2007 to educators in the School District of Manila and Nueva Ecija, Philippines. Recently, she participated in a compliance team for Volusia County Public Schools seeking accreditation from Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
Melviona's motto is "Cultural Competence enhances self-esteem and increases academic performance and worker productivity."
